When I encountered a flash webpage, I tried the install plugin option. Firefox go through Macromedia licence, download and then crashes. But worst, it cannot be restarted, because it seg. fault. I know that there is no 64bits flash plugin, but not everybody knows that. It should not install incompatible version. (Solution to restore is just to delete the flash files in ~/.mozilla/plugins.) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. On firefox RC1, go to webpage with flash plugin 2. Install plugin 3. Crashs at the end of install Actual Results: firefox crashes and cannot be restarted. Expected Results: It should not allow installation of incompatible plugins (I suppose it is installing a 32bits version) # emerge info Portage 2.0.51-r2 (gcc34-amd64-2004.1, gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 x86_64 15 Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1-r3 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.6-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X alsa amd64 apm avi bindist bitmap-fonts bonobo cdr crypt dv dvd dvdread eds encode esd f77 foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal howl imlib java jpeg ldap libg++ libwww mad mbox mikmod motif mozilla mpeg mplayer mysql mythtv ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline samba sdl slang spell ssl tcpd theora tiff truetype v4l v4l2 xml xml2 xmms xosd xv zlib"
Not something we can fix in Gentoo. Either firefox needs mending to prevent 32-bit plugins from loading in a 64-bit build, or the Macromedia stuff needs to be fixed to refrain from installing on amd64. Feel free to take the bug upstream in either direction.
