Hi! I've created and attached an ebuild for MBR. I think the program would make a valuable addition to Gentoo. It is distributed under GPL and is currently at version 1.1.5 (Sep 15 2001). The source code is available at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~neilt/mbr/ The program is a free replacement for the (Microsoft) Master Boot Record. It's very small and simple and installs itself in the master boot record of the device of your choice, for example /dev/hda. When booting the PC, it shows a menu for a configurable amount of time (usually 1 second). Normally (without any user input) it loads the boot sector of whatever partition is active and normal bootup continues with loading LILO or Grub or whatever. If the user presses the Shift key when the menu is displayed, it allows booting from other partitions than the active partitions. You can boot from the floppy drive as well. It is very useful when you want to boot a partition other than the active partition. I suggest putting the package in sys-apps/mbr because that's where LILO and Grub are, too. To see mbr in action, it is also a part of Debian. (http://packages.debian.org/stable/base/mbr.html) Finally, thanks to the Gentoo crew for creating a great OS. It is my favorite Linux.
