Server is running samba-3.0.7-r1, client was running samba-3.0.7-r1 now running samba-3.0.7-1ubuntu6 while I'm testing ubuntu. Had the problem in both cases. While playing an mp3 through a mounted directory it stops and skips, I find this in dmesg: CIFS VFS: No response buffer smbfs has the same problem, but takes waaay longer to reconnect (doesn't count as skips when it has 2 minute pauses). If I play through nfs the file plays without any skips whatsoever. Server log shows this: [2004/11/01 14:29:25, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(837) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) closed connection to service testshare [2004/11/01 14:29:25, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(648) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) connect to service testshare initially as user neuron (uid=1001, gid=10) (pid 28227) [2004/11/01 14:29:46, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(837) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) closed connection to service testshare [2004/11/01 14:29:46, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(648) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) connect to service testshare initially as user neuron (uid=1001, gid=10) (pid 28228) [2004/11/01 14:30:07, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(837) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) closed connection to service testshare [2004/11/01 14:30:07, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(648) 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2) connect to service testshare initially as user neuron (uid=1001, gid=10) (pid 28756) as you can see from the timestamps it reconnects constantly. 1) did you try sendfile=no, as suggested in the ebuild ? Which kernel did you use on the clients ? the later 2.6.x have some problems with smbfs, cifs might be a good alternative for the moment
Serverside I've been on 2.6.9 for a while because of an iptables bug on my firewall config. Clients have been 2.6.8.1, tried sendfile = no and been running an mp3 for 2 minutes without problems now (which is a new record), thanks, this seems to have solved it, I will reopen if I can recreate it with sendfile = no :)
Hmm, it seems this started happening again. It works fine for a while and then starts skipping.
turned on debug logging on the server and oddly enough I got debug data on the client aswell, the server had nothing interesting, but the client did: 3bff0000 424d53ff 0000002e c8018000 . .

Fam was the reason for this, disabling it and I've run for hours with no problems at all.
