NetworkManager is getting better and better, it would be nice to have an ebuild of the latest release 0.3.1, preferably in portage. This would allow more users to test it. It might not be easy because idealy it should replace the networking init scripts, and integrate well with the other init scripts, by providing net dependency for them. I don't know well enough how the rc system works, and how complicated this ca be, but I believe many users, especially desktops/laptops would appreciate NetwprkManager in gentoo.
dunno, segfaults on start up here. When you say it is getting better and better, is that from using it, or are you just trying to push it in :)
http://www.gnome.org/~clarkbw/blog/GNOME/cool_NetworkManager_news see the comment of Robert Paskowitz on it there. I haven't used it personally but heard it's indeed getting good.
Created attachment 42851 [details] NetworkManager-0.3.1.ebuild That ebuild you referenced is missing severl deps required for network manager to run, and doesn't seem to be a decent source of information. I have tested it, and it isn't ready to go into the tree(seing as most users probably don't want something this new/unstable in charge of their network connection). Here is a quick hacked up ebuild if you want to test it locally.

I have some success with my own cvs ebuild, which I'll be the first to admit is no where near ready for inclusion to the tree. Currently it is a cvs build, because I am doing some code, and need something more recent than releases. Looking at the ebuilds here, I can say that the reason they do not work (one of the reasons maybe, but the first I can spot), is that they are only requiring dbus from portage. Currently NM requires a cvs build of dbus, and the only reason for that that I have spotted is the 'at_console' policy in use. In my overlay, along with NM is a dbus-cvs ebuild. Of course, anyone using this stuff must gladly acknowledge that things can go wrong. Only use this if you really want to take NM out for a spin. Other notable dependancies include gnome-common 2.8.0 (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66376 -- no action taken on that yet), and when I wrote my ebuilds, I ran into a small problem with hal, since it requires dbus, but I made dbus-cvs a seperate package. So, I modified the hal ebuild to instead require virtual/dbus which is provided by the dbus-cvs ebuild. It's is quite a mess, but does function. Feel free to try it out, improve ebuilds, or actually hack on NM, as for each distro there is a seperat ebackend. DHCP support should be workign fine, and I plan to send some static support upstream very shortly. If someone has more expirence than me with sys-apps/iproute2, please take a look at the code once it is sent up. I am not too familiar with the tools, and am running into a few small problems. If anyone wants to contact me, feel free to e-mail, or come to #gentoo-laptop.
anyone got this ebuild working? I get an error when I start NetworkManager. With the cvs ebuild I get and Error about something missing too.
NetworkManager 0.5.1 is out, the ebuild is available into the gentopia overlay (http://gentopia.gentooexperimental.org/svn/overlay/net-misc/networkmanager/). Also this bug (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117755) is the same of this... I suggest to reopen one of these bugs, change the summary to something better, and generic, and try to resolv these bugs in a better way ;)
Hi boys! NetworkManager 0.6.3 is out! (http://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-list/2006-June/msg00069.html), this release contains many bugfixes(quote from 'NEWS' file :P) you can also find an ebuild here (http://gentopia.gentooexperimental.org/svn/overlay/net-misc/networkmanager/). As any dev reading this? Put NetworkManager into the official portage tree is planned? NetworkManager is really comfortable software for all the laptop users, it would be wonderful can install it in the gentoo normal way. Please at last reopen this bug ;)
Yes, I am paying attention, and in fact, that is my ebuild that you are pointing to. It is not ready for Portage just yet. There are a few more issues to be resolved, and will likely be after the Gentoo SoC before this gets added to Portage. Leaving as RESOLVED:LATER
