crafty can work without opening books, and only display a warning, but it really makes no sense to use a relatively powerful engine without those books.

The books aren't installed by this package, there isn't any other package providing those. There is games-board/gnuchess-book-1.02-r1, but it's not clear if crafty can use those or not.
