The file /etc/conf.d/net of baselayout-1.11.3 contains: # This blank configuration will automatically use DHCP for any net.* # scripts in /etc/init.d. To create a more complete configuration, # see /etc/conf.d/net.example and put your configuration in this file. I'm "concerned" about the last line. It's not perfectly clear: Is a user supposed to put stuff in the file net.example? Most certainly not, but the wording isn't as clear as it should be; the "this" could mean /etc/conf.d/net.example and also the file the user is currently reading (ie. /etc/conf.d/net). Better: # see /etc/conf.d/net.example and put your configuration in /etc/conf.d/net Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
