Gnome-disk-utlity (3.30.2) complains that sgdisk is missing if you partition and format a disk as ext4.

Error creating partition on /dev/sdx: the sgdisk utility is not available (udisks-error-quirk, 0)

Works once gptfdisk is installed.

This is udisks functionality (and error message), and you've disabled the default enabled USE=gptfdisk flag from udisks package.
