Everything works in XFree-4.3, but when attempting to switch xorg, I was unable to get the X server to start. There are no errors (EE) in the Xorg.0.log. I've tried with kernels 2.6.8-gentoo-r6 (i810 driver) and 2.6.8-gentoo-r1 (i915 driver). No matter what I do, when I start Xorg, a get a blank screen, the monitor switches off like it's not getting a signal and I have to remotely log in and reboot to recover. I've been configuring X servers on linux since 1994, and this is the worst I've seen it. :) For now, I'm sticking to XFree. After some digging, I suspect that the bug at http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1084 is related. There is a patch attached to that bug that seems to have fixed the problem for some. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Buy a Dell GX260 2. Install Gentoo 3. Install Xorg Actual Results: Box hangs. Must remotely log in an reboot.
Try adding that patch and let me know how it works. ebuild /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 unpack cd /var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1/work/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/i810 patch -p0 < /path/to/patch ebuild /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 qmerge
Please try latest xorg and reopen when you have.
