I used the Minimal Universal CD. The documentation on the referenced URL assumes that I have local access to portage and the distfiles. The Minimal CD does not contain this information, and the documentation says nothing about that fact. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use the Minimal CD 2. Follow the Documentation to Step 5.d 3. Look for files on CD (and fail). 4. Scratch Head Actual Results: I originally downloaded portage from a mirror, and then saw the list of distfiles and was not about to try downloading each of them. After starting the installation over again, I just skipped that portage install, and found the answer on the next step. Expected Results: There should be some note that if you have web access and are using the Minimal CD, you can skip to the next step and emerge --sync or emerge-webrsync if you're behind a firewall.
The LiveCDs are described right at the beginning of the handbook: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap2_sect3 """ Gentoo's Minimal LiveCD - Contains no stages, no Portage snapshot, no GRP packages and therefore not suitable for networkless installation """
