The actual error message (for easier searching through bugs) is: You're trying to run :rabbitmqctl on Elixir v1.9.0 but it has declared in its mix.exs file it supports only Elixir >= 1.6.6 and < 1.9.0 Solution would be to add upper version restriction to ebuild depend section. PS. No idea if it would be safe to cherry pick: https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-cli/commit/77bde7e0479979b97fc28d0a8d3e3b76243b93d6
