What X server are you running? What video card are you running? What video drivers are you using? Is your glibc compiled with your current gcc or an older version? Have you run opengl-update $xserver and then opengl-update $driver? What does glxinfo | grep -i direct say?
xorg 6.8.0-r1, nvidia fx5200, nvidia 1.0.6111-r2, glibc is compiled with latest version which is 3.4.2, opengl has been updated to use nvidia, direct rendering: Yes
Did you do the whole opengl-update xorg-x11 && opengl-update nvidia? Is it still locking up?
If that doesn't work, try recompiling glibc, xorg-x11, and nvidia-kernel with CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" as most likely the problem is your egregious misuse of CFLAGS.
yes it is still locking the system I am making sure the glibc was built with this compiler simply by reemerging it ... I will check it in the morning before I leave for work if I have time if not it will be shortly after 6 pm EDT when I get around to check it.
Even with a change to CFLAGS it is a no go...
just so you know tho these flags are from 6 other developers of gentoo and they dont have any issues they play the game just fine.
I have the exact same problems here gothgirl@gothicbox ~ $ emerge info Portage 2.0.51-r2 (default-x86-2004.2, gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.4.20041006-r0, 2.6.9-gentoo i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo i686 Celeron (Coppermine) Gentoo Base System version 1.5.3 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.92.0.2-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -funroll-loops" CHOST="i586-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/alias /var/qmail/control /var/vpopmail/domains /var/vpopmail/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -funroll-loops" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.ccccom.com http://gentoo.ccccom.com http://gentoo.netnitco.net" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X alsa apache2 apm avi berkdb bitmap-fonts crypt cups dba encode esd f77 foomaticdb gd gd-external gdbm gif gnome gpm gtk gtk2 imlib java jpeg libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mozilla moznocompose moznoirc moznomail moznoxft mozsvg mozxmlterm mpeg mysql ncurses nls nowin nptlonly oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd truetype x86 xml2 xmms xprint xv zlib"
If we have developers recommending such asinine CFLAGS, then they need to have their developer status re-examined. Anyway, have you tried looking in your ~/.armyops210/System/ArmyOps.log file? Have you tried removing your ~/.armyops210 folder and restarting the game? You have to understand here that so far neither of you have proven to me that this is anything I can do a single thing about. Remember that we don't have the source code to America's Army, or to the Nvidia GLX driver, so unless you can prove that it is something on your system that isn't caused by you and is a problem globally in Gentoo (or even from an option in Gentoo) then there's nothing I can do about it.
these seems to be a bug in gnome that is causing the problem. I have tested xfce4, enlightenment, fluxbox and now blackbox and they have no issues running AA. I have not been able to find out what would be causing such an issue in gnome as of yet but if I do I will post back until then I will continue to run my fluxbox which is what I should have run to begin with :D
Are you running esd when running the other window managers/desktop environments? I think it is really strange that it only happens in Gnome, as the only thing that could possibly be going wrong is your sound being already in use. Anyway, REOPEN with more information (or ditch gnome... ;p)
