One of the nice feaures in Gentoo are slots for packages. So why not use them instead of having a libxml and a libxml2 package? If we go this way we are not better off than a rpm based dependency hell distribution. If you disagree, feel free to close this bug and mark it invalid. no we do agree, but this pack was added before slots existed & reworking it takes a lot effort & time we just don't have right now. This is still on the long-term todo agenda.
