Does it work for root?

Check some permissions and variables:
ls -ld /tmp/.{ICE,X11}-unix

drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 Oct 19 00:02 /tmp/.ICE-unix
drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 Oct 20 11:18 /tmp/.X11-unix

ls -l ~/.Xauthority

-rw------- 1 donnie users 275 Oct 20 14:41 /home/donnie/.Xauthority

$ echo $XAUTHORITY
/home/donnie/.Xauthority

From http://dmx.sourceforge.net/FAQ (replace Xdmx with X):

Q1A. When a client tries to connect to the Xdmx server, the following
error is seen FROM THE XDMX SERVER:

AUDIT: <timestamp>: <pid> Xdmx: client 1 rejected from local host

A1A. This means you started Xdmx with the XAUTHORITY environment
variable set and/or with the -auth option, and you are not sharing
(or have not created!) the magic cookie for the Xdmx display.
E.g., if you started Xdmx with "Xdmx :1", then the Xdmx server and
the client will both use the cookie associated with ":1".

From http://mariner.cs.ucdavis.edu/slackware/doc/xfree86/xfree86-4.4rc-binary-xdm-crash.txt (emphasis added):

4. How to solve xdm/kdm refusing login problem
Unfortunately, xdm (X Display Manager) refuses any login attempts
after you have installed the XFree86 4.4 rc binaries. The error
messages in /var/log/xdm-errors are like the following:

       AUDIT: Sun May 27 22:59:37 2001: 7624 X: client 2 rejected from local
host
       Auth name: XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 ID: -1

To fix it, you need to change the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/
xdm-config, add the following line:

     DisplayManager*authName: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1

Somebody have proposed to change DisplayManager*authorize to
`false' in xdm-config, this is not a very good solution. We want
authorization for security reason.

*****I do not know the option to fix it in kdm. But it should be
similar.*****

BTW, gdm does not have this problem.
