build log xz-compressed

Compilation fails probably due to an empty argument to __VA_ARGS__.
It might be a caused by me using gcc-8.3.0-r1

You can rule gcc-8.3.0 out of the equation. I currently have it compiled without a problem with said compiler. I am gonna review your info and build.log so will advise in a bit.

your cflags are redundant, most of it is already enabled with -march=sandybridge. Also I am not totally sure you will find much support having -fPIC in your system CFLAGS. I would suggest you tone down the CFLAGS to something much more reasonable and try and reproduce your results. I went ahead and enabled inspector useflag just so I would match what you had for build and still had no problems.

Thanks Jory,

it turned out that any specification of -std in CXXFLAGS cause this failure.
even -std=c++11. Without any such specification it compiles.

IMHO, any C++ source which doesn't compile with -std=c++17 is broken nowadays.

No, that wasn't it.
