with simple emerge grub and installing it i got GRUB GRUB... GRUB GRUB... . . all over the screen on booting - this happend twice on different installations. not sure if it is a grub or a gentoo problem - however, i solved it by using grub 0.92 instead (got it from http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-download.html)
0.90 is quite old ... the newer version of 0.92 has solved a lot of random problems ... btw thx for pointing this out, i had that problem too ;)
ok, this actually did work for me, because I got the same error as you did on grub0.90 (been using lilo all this time). The only thing now is that grub refuses to show me any splash screens. It's only text, which is fairly ugly, and means that the lilo -> grub switchover seems rather pointless for me.
someone mentioned the boot splash problem and said by removing the leading /boot/ in the splash defintion, it fixed it for him ...
I tried that too. no dice
Created attachment 3629 [details] grub-0.92-r1.tar.gz Some fixes: - bootlogo works again! - menu.lst now gets renamed to grub.conf and menu.lst becomes a symlink to grub.conf (fixes bug #6300) - rewrote pkg_setup() to have /boot correctly mounted. Also remounts /boot rw now if its mounted read-only. Still don't know if this version works with xfs. Can someone test this?

Bug 8158 == another example of 0.92 working when 0.90 doesnt :/
grub-0.92-r1 (attachement id=3629) is obsolete. see bug #7903 with attachement (id=4106).
grub-0.92-r1 is on cvs; please update/report. i think we can unmask it real-soon-now...
