The last time I added such patches on cdrtools, there were a lot of bugs about problems with cdrtools, like missing audio-CD-support or problems with CD-RW. I'm really cautious with patching cdrtools itself. There are many people out there who rely on this tool for backups. Nevertheless you can find the dvdrtools in portage, which work on many systems. If you really need that package (as it is the only one which works for your hardware), you have to convince me ;-)
