Description Ervin Peters 2019-03-26 14:34:58 UTC
On c++ coding my vscode complained about a file not found. This file should reside somewhere under

/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-8.2.0-r6/work/gcc-8.2.0/libstdc++v3/libsupc++/vterminate.cc

...which looks very crazy to me, since this dir is deleted after installation.

So I took a look to /usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/8.2.0 and did a

$: grep -r 'var/tmp/portage' *

which found many occurrences which probably shouldn't be there in some cases, but sometimes might be irrelevant.

But since vscode complained about it, some portions might be executed, although I can't find the file vterminate.cc anywhere else, which looks also not good to me.

Maybe someone understands whats going wrong since compiling processes work...

I don't know what vscode does but my guess is it tries to read debugging section of a gcc itself. Debugging sections contain file line references.

If you don't use FEATURES=installsources and gcc binaries are not fully stripped off debug info then it's expected to have references to deleted files.
Comment 2 Ervin Peters 2019-03-27 05:50:31 UTC
That sounds reasonable. Than this would be an rather cosmetic issue.

Visual studio code is a multipurpose code editor or a small IDE an my Project is C++ in a debug configuration.

How much more space does the installsources FEATURE take? It seems to me that installing sources globally would bring in many Gigabytes of data. My distfiles are 18G compressed files, uncompressed that might be factor 5 to 10 more.

Is there a gentoo way to install selected sources, a subset needed for development?

You can enable FEATURES=installsources only for selected packages (you will also need dev-util/debugedit package installed):
    https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/package.env
