xfce4-verve-plugin-1.1.0 (and earlier versions) contain a useful program "verve-focus" (for me, it's essential for use of this plugin). In version 2.0.0, it's no longer there. It's an upstream problem. This feature was removed because the software was migrated to GTK3 and nobody knew how to port DBUS support to GTK3: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14878, https://mail.xfce.org/pipermail/xfce-announce/2018-April/000601.html I hope very much that version 1.x will remain in Portage indefinitely (or at least until version 2.x is un-broken).
Well, this is clearly upstream's decision, so there's nothing we can do about it (well, unless you expect us to rewrite the plugin to GTK+3 -- sorry, we can't afford to do it).

It's an interesting maintenance problem. If upstream knowingly introduces regression in the software, should the distribution just follow suit? One option would be not to accept the flawed version in the distribution.
Yes. That's why we're downstream; we package the software, not maintain old versions of it.
