I suspect thunar or your xfconf setup just requires a proper dbus user session bus running, as many desktops do. But assigning to maintainer for consideration.
Are you using it outside Xfce?

I believe dbus user session bus should just work if dbus is installed - as long as you don't shortcircuit the machinery by having a custom .xinitrc (which is often a bad idea - better to have a Session file for it and use that from DM or via XSESSION variable for startx). /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/80-dbus has the magic
I'm afraid this is a special case that we don't really support. If you'd like to have it fixed, I'd prefer if you filed it upstream yourself.
Found the problem. I had installed the Anaconda python distribution, and it seems that Anaconda has its own dbus-launch that was being found instead of the system version. Ugh. Took the anaconda environment setup out of my .bashrc, and everything works again. Sorry about that!
