for whatever useflags I set, or unset, I get the message: Invalid audio output driver name: oss. this happens no matter if I specify any other audio output plugin in the configuration (either per user, or globally) or if I set it directly with -ao sdl or something on the command line. it has been like this since 0.90_pre6 was released into portage. the odd thing is that it works fine on a box running 1.3b, but it breaks on my main 1.2-based box. I'll be very happy to help test any solution. oh, and I'm still running 0.90_pre5-r1, since it works. hopefully it won't dissapear anytime soon. ;-)
USE flags?
right now I have: almach root # grep ^USE /etc/make.conf USE="imap tcpd mozilla gnome kde tk X pda lm-sensors arts esd" but I've also tried removing arts and esd, using -oss, adding oss, using -arts and -esd.
You sure there isn't an interfering config file which you overlooked ? mplayer console output shows which config file it is using.
0.90_pre6-r2 suddenly works, I'm sorry I haven't had time to do any real testing on the case. -pre2 just came with an --update world, and I didn't think about it until now. this is just weird. ;-/ the changelog doesn't exactly give much faith in it being anything except some user fault. my apologies.
I think it's safe to close this one, it's probably something I did somehow. every build of mplayer since has just worked.
