Description Matt Cheely 2004-10-07 19:18:45 UTC
When I try to view a page running 2.6.8(-r4 or -r7, haven't run any others) with flash content, all I get is a blank white box. I can move the cursor over the box, and it seems to see link locations (the cursor changes), but that's all I get. If I boot to 2.6.7-r14, everything works fine.

I'm running an amd64 system, so this is with the firfox-bin browser.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.install 2.6.8-r4 or r7
2.go to a page with flash
3.witness the vast white emptiness

Actual Results:
I saw a blank space where the flash content shoudl have been.

Expected Results:
Played the latest strongbad email.
Comment 1 Matt Cheely 2004-10-08 05:42:35 UTC
Looking around today, I discovered Bug 63907, which may be related to this, although as far as I know, flash doesn't use openGL.
Comment 2 Joel Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-21 12:22:45 UTC
Please give an example link with flash on it that isn't working.
Also, 2.6.8 is your version of what? Kernel?
What version of firefox and netscape-flash are you running?
Comment 3 Matt Cheely 2004-10-21 15:48:00 UTC
Whoops. Sorry about the boneheaded lack of information in the inital report.

2.6.8-r4 and later kernels from gentoo-dev-sources are the ones that cause breakage.

I'm running
firefox-bin: 1.0_pre-r1
netscape-flash: 7.0.25

An example flash page that doesn't work is http://www.homestarrunner.com

Also, here's yet another bug which seems to be related to this one, and others that have shown up in 32-bit applications on amd64 since the 2.6.8-r4 kernel: Bug 67462
Comment 4 Herbie Hopkins (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-25 06:26:44 UTC
This issue seems to be fixed in gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r1 which is now marked as stable so I think this bug can be closed.
Comment 5 Andy Dalton 2004-10-26 17:53:15 UTC
I'm running gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.9-r1 and when I see a flash animation, I only see the left half of it -- the right half is blank. I'm not sure if this is a related issue or not.

Comment 6 Dan 2004-12-20 19:59:57 UTC
I agree, I don't if this is related, but I can confirm the behavior reported by Andy Dalton. The jibjab.com site displays only on the left half of the screen. Other sites like unfortunateeventsmovie.com not only display only the left half, but also crash the browser. When that happened, I tried to do a screen capture using the gnome screen utility and the desktop froze completely. I am using kernel 2.6.5 and gnome 2.8.1.

I have unmerged and re-emerged netscape-flash to no avail. I checked for old copies of the flash library hanging around, and found none. My main browser is epiphany 1.4.6, but I also tried it in mozilla 1.7 and got the exact same result.
Comment 7 Dan 2004-12-21 04:17:54 UTC
I just updated from mozilla 1.7.3 to 1.7.5, but there's no change in behavior.
Comment 8 Simon Stelling (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-22 11:37:32 UTC
i have no idea what could be the cause of your strange behaviour, but went it away with a never version?
Comment 9 Dan 2005-03-22 14:45:37 UTC
No, it is still a problem. This forum post:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-312299-highlight-flash+mozilla.html
describes the same issue and says that it is a problem with how mozilla based browsers handle flash screens with width=100%. Also that non-mozilla browsers like opera handle it correctly. I have not tried that but I have tried firefox and indeed it does exactly the same thing.
Comment 10 Dan 2005-03-23 04:14:35 UTC
Follow up: appears to be a known incompatibility with MS proprietary code. See this bug report --
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=250830
Comment 11 Pavel Gretchishkin 2005-05-02 15:43:41 UTC
I have the same problems with flash plugin. In firefox flash area is white and in opera is black. On my system problem began after moving from xorg 6.8 to 6.8.2
When I start opera from console first time after upgrage it said "can't open libXm.so.2". When I create symlink from libXm.so.2 to libXm.so.3 it displays:

/opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins/operamotifwrapper-2: Symbol `_XmStrings' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking

Maybe it is reason?
Comment 12 Simon Stelling (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-31 09:00:01 UTC
not arch-specific, reassigning
Comment 13 Christian Apolloni 2005-12-07 11:58:17 UTC
I had a similar problem (flash graphics not working, only white instead, but
sound and "links" OK) and I solved it disabling the Adblock extension, even
though Adblock was not configured to block the flash content.
Comment 14 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2006-01-14 11:51:04 UTC
deer park 1.5 emerged from source last week, Linux 2.6.14, tried flash plugin from gentoo ebuilds and downloaded from web to user profile, desactivated all extensiuons, de-installed adblock, tried with new FF-user-profile, created new user on computer, Xorg 6.8.2 ... not sure what you need to know.

=> White space instead of Flash animations. It never worked for me under Gentoo 2005.1 installed end november.

lets put that ... dont think it will help:

Comment 15 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2006-01-17 11:46:37 UTC
I did my weekly esync 15th night, emerge world 16th, and today I have flash 'visual' working ... I will try to sort out what changed since last week.

in very short: works for me.
(used not to)
(but no clue why yet)
Comment 16 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2006-01-17 11:54:49 UTC
sorry, my fault: I did not do enough proof testing.
The website I use have switched from Flash to animated pictures ... Flash does not work. I thought so, I was wrong.
Comment 17 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2006-01-20 21:00:17 UTC
I have done esync + emerge world, and now, it REALLY works for me ... tested several websites ...

PLEASE, can some one confirm works and mark bug invalid/solved/wontfix/cantfix/works-for-me ?

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278684, I tried the above link and links referred to in the upstream bug and it works just fine.

http://www.homestarrunner.com/intro.html
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/
http://www.svt.ford.com

both work perfectly fine w/ FF 1.5.0.1 (both -bin and compiled) and netscape-flash-7.0.61

Also working just fine on a bunch of other sites, I tried http://flashfun.doupe.cz/ which is all flash and no problems at all.

Closing, cannot be reproduced.
Comment 20 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2010-09-22 11:08:37 UTC
The error <<has different size in shared object, consider re-linking>> can be fixed by remergint the package owning the file. See bug 338347 . The issue is not in the app, but in portage 2.2, or in revdep-rebuild.
