screenshot of the problem

While trying to setup my multifunction device via hp-setup, everything goes well (it gets autodetected on the network) until the point where ppd file has to be chosen. It says "(Not found. Click browse button to select a PPD file.)", however after choosing the file, the path doesn't appear in that input field and the abovementioned message stays there. The field looks like readonly, I can't even write the path into it manually (or delete that message).

Not really sure what is causes this issue! I can not reproduce it because the ppd for my printer is found. However I am also not able to change it manually.

Can you please post the output of "emerge -v --info hplip".

Did you install the hplip-plugin package as your printer requires the binary plugin?

You can also try if you are able to set up the device using the cups web interface at http://localhost:631/.

ok, some progress here ... I have found that it needs cups running, then it pre-fills the field with the autodetected value

well, it could be mentioned somewhere, and the program could throw some meningful error message when cups is not running

> However I am also not able to change it manually.

... so you can confirm the bug

even with cups running, I cannot change the value -

I've managed to setup the device on one machine, but on another machine, it is misdetected for some reason and the ppd file cannot be changed

well, "to setup the device" - something is still wrong, I can print via the hp application but I cannot see the printer in normal printing dialogues of the individual applications like lximage

yes, it asked me to do so ... and it asked for password despite I've run hp-setup as root, strange

that's my setup on third machine, and it went like a charm (except that I had to write in IP address manually)

I wouldn't bother with hplip[*] if it weren't for scanning - and unfortunately, it 'sees' the scanner only after the printer part is installed

[*] btw, printing anything via native cups is instant, while using the hplip application, so far I've tried just two images, and it took about ten minutes of processing(!)

Is this still an issue?

I had the same problem with an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw with a manually installed hplib. The right .ppd was available, but hplib could not assign it.
I think these are upstream bugs in hplib.
So far I found many discussions on this problem on all distribtions.
I suggest to clarify it in the hplib support channels.
It is unlikely a problem with the ebuild. Please update here, if you found a solution or link an upstream ticket.

sorry for late reply, I've missed the nagmail

I haven't tried - I've worked around the issue by using cups directly as discussed in #c3 and as for scanning, I'm using the scan to mail feature

well, not sure if "a problem" but there might be some room for improvement ... I was talking with Fedora cups maintainer and he told me something like he had to adjust some paths, so maybe looking into Fedora specs could give some inspiration ...

Going to close this as I don't think I can do anything else here. Please direct this to upstream hplip or cups.
