Current stable is 4.0-r1, which, when installed with default config file, can't be started : 

verdi /etc/diamond # tail /var/log/diamond/diamond.log  -f -n 100

I confirm applying this patch allows diamond to start on gentoo.

for completeness, does diamond-4.0.515 work for you?
