Luxy Sans (up to size 9, and) 12 font shows a - instead of ~. I noticed that after switching to xorg (x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2), since the backup versions of text files on my KDE3.3 desktop now had a trailing - instead of ~. Sizes 10, 11, and above 13 are ok. After creating xorg.conf with xorgconfig only font size 10 (and <= 8) seems to be affected. The fonts look however worse than before. The previous xorg.conf I just symlinked to XF86Config-4 created by fglrxconfig (I have an ATI graphics card).
Could you attach your /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and local.conf and your xorg.conf please?
this is just hinting going over the top iirc, there is another bug about this somewhere. My suggestion is not to use luxi, but ttf-bitstream-vera .

Had a similar problem where any upgrade to xorg-x11 would cause luxi font to look worse. An old post on the forum (german) has the solution which was to delete /usr/share/fonts/TTF directory. That solved my problem. BTW, this directory has Luxi and bitstream vera fonts and seem to get picked over the ones in Type1 directory.
Issue of fontconfig preferences of TrueType over Type1.
There is not much we can do about that afaik, I rather just remove the ttf versions from the tree. iirc they're badly converted versions of the Type1's anyway and as such have no added value.
Is this thing still needed with new xterm? Also is anyone interested in this thing? Looks quite dead (the bug)
Well, currently by default luxi fonts are not installed. So this part of the bug is fixed. Fixing font itself is not possible since license prohibits modification. And lastly, I failed to reproduce this bug currently. even with size 6 I can see ~...
