Description Andy 2004-10-07 08:32:29 UTC
Luxy Sans (up to size 9, and) 12 font shows a - instead of ~.
I noticed that after switching to xorg (x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2),
since the backup versions of text files on my KDE3.3 desktop now had a trailing - instead of ~. Sizes 10, 11, and above 13 are ok.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.unmerged xfree
2.emerged xorg-x11
3.etc-updated over 250 config
files in /etc/... by accepting the update versions.

Actual Results:

Comment 1 Andy 2004-10-10 15:24:56 UTC
After creating xorg.conf with xorgconfig only font size 10 (and <= 8) seems to be affected. The fonts look however worse than before.

The previous xorg.conf I just symlinked to XF86Config-4 created by fglrxconfig (I have an ATI graphics card).
Comment 2 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-10 16:16:14 UTC
Could you attach your /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and local.conf and your xorg.conf please?
Comment 3 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-11 03:28:25 UTC
this is just hinting going over the top iirc, there is another bug about this somewhere.

My suggestion is not to use luxi, but ttf-bitstream-vera .

But luxi seems to be the default font in KDE(?), so this might affect more people.

Oops, it's not the case, now default is helvetica, and this one looks OK down to size 8.

Had a similar problem where any upgrade to xorg-x11 would cause luxi font to
look worse. An old post on the forum (german) has the solution which was to
delete /usr/share/fonts/TTF directory. That solved my problem. BTW, this
directory has Luxi and bitstream vera fonts and seem to get picked over the ones
in Type1 directory.
Comment 11 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-31 20:00:46 UTC
Issue of fontconfig preferences of TrueType over Type1.
Comment 12 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-01 02:46:05 UTC
There is not much we can do about that afaik, I rather just remove the ttf versions from the tree. iirc they're badly converted versions of the Type1's anyway and as such have no added value.
Comment 13 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-21 08:51:14 UTC
Is this thing still needed with new xterm?

Also is anyone interested in this thing?

Looks quite dead (the bug)
Comment 14 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-12 08:04:52 UTC
Well, currently by default luxi fonts are not installed. So this part of the bug is fixed. Fixing font itself is not possible since license prohibits modification. And lastly, I failed to reproduce this bug currently. even with size 6 I can see ~...
