In the past, the 'net-misc/dhcpcd' package has been part of 'system,' meaning that after installation, it was available when bringing up their ethernet interface. However, it appears to no longer be part of 'system' and there is no section of the installation documentation that points out that users should 'emerge dhcpcd' if needed. Without this, new users who use DHCP following the installation documentation reboot their brand-new Gentoo installation and can't establish network connectivity. "It worked when I booted the liveCD, but after I installed it doesn't. I followed the installation guide! What's wrong?" My suggestion is to add a blurb to the installation documentation prior to their first reboot instructing them to 'emerge dhcpcd' if they're planning on using it.
should be put into chapter 8 of the handbook (Configuring your System)
I knew there was something going on about the subject (the threads http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/21754 and especially http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/21624 come to mind) but I'd hoped for a conclusion or newly-entitled warning... bleh
Fixed in CVS. It's only for cascading profiles for the time being, but 2004.3 will use cascading profiles so it's best to already have it in (also because some users already use cascading profiles from the beginning of the installation).
