Comment:

I have Gentoo stable servers (using rc, not systemd), and the update from nrpe-2.15-r3 to nrpe3.2.1-r1 causes nrpe. Now, nrpe won't start (and I see nothing logged), while rolling-back to nrpe-2.15-r3 does work.

On a system with syslog-ng logging the daemon facility to /var/log/daemon.log there are some nrpe messages in there (log_facility=daemon is default in nrpe.cfg).

Try setting:
log_file=/tmp/nrpe.log
debug=1
pid_file=/tmp/nrpe.pid

Then switch to nagios user and run nrpe manually:
nrpe -c /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg -f

It should remain running. Anything in the output or in the logfile?
