I haven't been able to try this on an x86 box, but it fails on my amd64 box. Downgrading to 2.0.0 fixes the problem. courier-imapd and Cyrus were both tested, but it looks as though evolution isn't even connecting, so the server isn't the problem. Evolution 2.0.1 didn't prompt me to accept the server's credentials or enter a password. After I went back to 2.0.0, I was prompted for the credentials and password as normal. $ emerge --info Portage 2.0.51_rc7 (default-linux/amd64/gcc34-2004.2, gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r0, 2.6.8-gentoo-r6 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.8-gentoo-r6 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+ Gentoo Base System version 1.5.3 distcc 2.17 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r4 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1-r3 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/mnt/raid0/gentoo/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache cvs distlocks fixpackages sandbox sign userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/ http://gentoo.mirrored.ca/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/mnt/raid0/gentoo/packages-amd64" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/mnt/raid0/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/mnt/raid0/gentoo/gentoo-x86" SYNC="rsync://192.168.0.1/gentoo-portage" USE="3ds S3TC X X509 Xaw3d aac aalib accessibility acl acpi activefilter aim alsa amd amd64 apache2 apm arts atlas audiofile avantgo avi bcmath berkdb bidi bindist bitmap-fonts bzlib calendar caps cddb cdparanoia cdr chroot clamav clanJavaScript clanVoice clearpasswd client clisp cmucl crypt cscope ctype cups curl curlwrappers dba dbase dbcp dbm dbx dedicated dga dio directfb divx4linux dmx dnd doc dv dvd dvdr dvdread edl emacs emacs-w3 encode esd ethereal evms2 evo exif expat ext-png ext-zlib f77 faac faad fam fax fbcon fbdev ffmpeg flac flash flatfile fltk fluidsynth foomaticdb freetype fs ftp gb gcj gcl gd gd-external gdbm ggi gif gimp gimpprint glade glut gmp gmtfull gmthigh gmtsuppl gmttria gnome gnomedb gnuplot gnutls gphoto2 gpm gps gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile hbci iconv icq idl image imagemagick imap imlib imlib2 innodb ipalias ipv6 jabber jack java javacomm javamail javascript jbig jikes joystick jp2 jpeg junit justify kde ladcca lcd lcms libdsk libedit libg++ libgda libsamplerate libwww lids live lmtp log4j ltsp lua lucid lzo lzw lzw-tiff mad maildir makecheck mcal md5sum mhash mikmod mime mixer mng mnogosearch mono motif mozcalendar mozctl mozdevelop mozilla mozp3p mozsvg mozxmlterm mp3 mpeg mpeg4 mpi mplayer msession msn mule multilib music mysql mysqli mythtv nas native ncurses neXt nis nls nptl nvidia nviz oav objc oci8 odbc offensive ofx oggvorbis oldworld openal opengl oracle7 oscar oss ovrimos pam parse-clocks pcap pcmcia pcntl pcre pda pdf pdflib perl php pic pie plotutils png pnp portaudio posix postgres ppds prelude procmail psyco python qhull qt quicktime readline recode regexp rplay rtc ruby samba sasl sdk sdl server session sharedmem silc simplexml skey slang slp sndfile soap sockets socks5 sox speex spell spl sqlite src ssl svg sysvipc tcltk tcpd tetex tga theora tidy tiff timidity tokenizer transcode transparent-proxy truetype trusted type1 ucs2 usb v4l v4l2 vda vhosts videos vim-with-x virus-scan wddx wmf wsconvert wxwin wxwindows xchattext xemacs xface xforms xfs xine xinerama xml xml2 xmlrpc xmms xosd xpm xprint xsl xv xvid yahoo zeo zlib"

ok, then reassigning to amd64 since it seems to not affect x86...
It does affect x86. I had the same problem with a Pentium 4 machine. Evolution doesn't ask the password to retrieve mail from the IMAP server of my ISP (I think it's Cyrus). Just FYI: I'm seeing the same. Tried evolution-2.0.1 with and without the ipv6 USE flag. evolution-2.0.0 worked (even with the updated libsoup, gal,libgtkhtml-3 and evolution-data-server for Evo 2.0.1). tcpdump shows that Evo doesn't try to open a TCP connection. The camel debug output doesn't show anything spectacular.

Might be related to bug 49359.

for reference: http://bugs.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=67378
Adding imap to /etc/services seems to fix this bug (this was suggested on ximian bugzilla, link in comment #15). Lines I added to /etc/services: imap 143/tcp imap 143/udp
right, the problem was introduced in 2.0.1 with the changes to camel/providers/imap/camel-imap-store.c It checks /etc/services for imap but doesn't inform the user when it returns NULL. /etc/services should be changed to read: imap2 143/tcp imap # Interim Mail Access P 2 and 4 imap2 143/udp imap cc'ing base-system: can you take a look at baselayout and see if it can be modified with these changes. Thanks.

Bug 66297 is NOT a duplicate of this bug (it is in reference to the inability to SEND emails using SMTP servers)... has been reopened
In regards to Comment #17, my /etc/services is already that way. I presume you meant "imap" and not "imap2"?
FieldySnuts: look closer, imap is printed after the portnum. i.e imap is an alias for imap2.
Ah, thank you for being my eyes. Doing this fixed the problem for me in 2.0.1. Thanks!
http://bugs.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=47821 here's the patch that started this all. this is related to bug #66297. they are the two service names that are missing on gentoo. SuSE has both (i assume ximian folks test on suse, given they are part of novell ;) smtps 465/tcp and imap 143/tcp imap2. one could devise a temporary stop-gap for evo-2.0.1 until the new /etc/services make it into gentoo. it'll be reversing parts of the patch, especially the service->url->port bits for smtp and imap. unfortunately, i didn't run into this when testing because i use imaps and plain-smtp. that'll teach me!
fixed in cvs
