I'm trying to use k3b to burn CDs. It reads my cd-rom correctly (A Slimtype combo LSC-24082K) but while it correctly detects that it can read DVDs and write CD-RWs, it doesn't think it can write CDs. (In K3b Options->Devices is reads Write CDs: No). The CDRom is in an AMD m6805 with device path /dev/ide/host0/bus1/lun0/cd. I've tried blowing away the .kde/share/config/k3brc file with no success. The odd part is that it was working before. I don't know what I upgraded to change this as I haven't burnt a CD in a while. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge k3b on an m6805 2.Try and burn a cd. 3. Actual Results: K3b complained stating no device was available for writing. Expected Results: Written the CD using the available burner. When I run k3b as root it detects the device properly. Is this a permissions issue? Also I'm using kernel 2.6.8, which cdrecord -scanbus notes 'has issues'. This does not seem like a k3b bug after all, so I will set this to INVALID (?)
I had some problems too with the k3b under 2.6.8.1 (development-sources). I was neither able to erase the DVD-RW as normal user (error box: Unable to determine the current formatting state ...), nor write it. Example output of dvd+rw-format: bash-2.05b$ dvd+rw-format /dev/cdrom * DVD

Then I saw your post. And indeed on 2.6.8-gentoo-r4 everything works fine.
