Could you post some information about how exactly the new freetype breaks wine-vanilla, please?

With media-libs/freetype-2.9.1-r3 installed:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7e9fc09e (thread 0022), starting debugger...
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7e9fc09e (thread 0024), starting debugger...

Re-emerging wine does not help.

Works OK with media-libs/freetype-2.8:2

Does this happen with something like 'winecfg'? If that's a no, could you please give some examples of applications you've been running into this with?

I've tried Steam and a few games I have there, with no success in re-producing this.

I had someone else report this to me a while ago, but they couldn't get to the machine yet to get more information.

I should expand on this excel 2003.

word 2003 also give error:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7e9fc09e (thread 0022), starting debugger...
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7e9fc09e (thread 0024), starting debugger...
but then continues to run OK.

While I lack any better ideas still, just to be sure, have you checked that you're actually running 2.0.3 when this issue shows up?

This isn't exactly identical to the other case I know of, where even 'winecfg' would not run, but the issue there turned out to be slotting (the active Wine version was older than 2.0.3).
Comment 7 Nick Sarnie gentoo-dev 2018-07-14 23:31:33 UTC
Does this issue still occur on in-tree versions of wine-vanilla?

2.x ebuilds have been dropped as 3.0.1 is stable.

I found I was using an old version of crossover-linux (15.3.1). I had download the latest version last January and thought I'd installed it but clearly forgotten. Download the latest release (17.5.0), upgraded it and excel ran without error. Thank you for your help, this issue is now resolved.

Closing as 'invalid' due to the fact that things indeed work with the mentioned versions of Wine and Freetype (CrossOver being a rather different beast all in all).

Thanks for the report though!
