Is there a reason you have to use <=media-tv/kodi-17.6 ? Can you not use the latest version for some reason?

1. 17.3-r1 is the current stable version in the tree.

I think I'm going to take your suggestion to heart and keep kodi on ~ from now on -- sure looks like a good candidate.
