I used to have firefox-0.9.3 and it worked well. Then I updated to 1.o_pre, and encountered the following error: 1)no new bookmarks can be added. If I do "add bookmark", it shows up correctly. Then I exit firefox and restart it. It won't be there any more. 2)I rename bookmarks.html and start the bookmark manager in firefox; obviously I'll get an empty list. I do "import from file", all old bookmarks are imported. I restart firefox, and the bookmarks list is empty again. No new "bookmarks.html" file has been created. I DO have write permissions for both bookmarks.html and the directory in which it resides. Workaround: switch back to 0.9.3, that contains security flaws, or use another browser and wait for a better time :(
brutally wiping off ~/.mozilla and then importing the old bookmarks.html using the bookmarks manager fixes it. DAMN, all my cookies preferences gone. >_<
this is a well-known upstream bug. not sure if there's anything to be done with regard to Gentoo. perhaps a migration script? anyhow, file your bug with bugzilla.mozilla.org
