Description Tim Burrell 2004-09-24 07:31:50 UTC
rsync6.ca.gentoo.org is ridiculously slow. We're talking dialup speeds... 5k/s.

This is an ongoing problem I have seen for at least 1 month. Either the information on their info text is a lie, or they've overloaded their connection. Either way they definitely need to do some work to qualify as a main rotation mirror. Get these guys off the rotation list until they can fix the problem.

From their info text:

        rsync.mirrored.ca (209.47.158.135)
             http://www.mirrored.ca
               mirrors@mirrored.ca

        Sun E250 :: 2 x 450MHz + 2Gb RAM
       Connected via redundant 100mb links

          Maximum rsync connections: 100
           Maximum ftp connections: 500

               This server is AKA:
              rsync6.ca.gentoo.org

Evan,

Any idea on why this user may be seeing slow speeds?

Tim,
For further reference, demanding we take a machine out of rotation won't gain you many favor points when requesting something from us.
Respectfully,
Jeffrey

Just for reference, this is the second Canadian rsync mirror I've had to complain about. The first one was being run off of a commercial DSL line.

I've tested mirrored.ca from several different networks (including the local university, which has a lot of bandwidth, and in fact even hosts a full portage mirror itself); all experienced the same level of speed.

I think more work really needs to be put into the mirror acceptance process. Stress testing a new mirror is probably in order, and even random sampling of all the mirrors might be a good idea.

Imagine the case where a Gentoo loving sysadmin manages to convince his company to switch to Gentoo, because of how easy it would make his life. The day they go live he goes to demo portage to a higer-up and the first thing they see is a downed server, or even just a painfully slow server with an info text that talks about "wikkid streaming techno yah!$#&!" (which was on the info text of the first mirror I complained about).

I know my tone was a little harsh, but seriously, if the Gentoo mirror admins were doing their jobs properly you would never have heard from me. And if I hadn't already had the exact same problem once before, my tone wouldn't have been the way it was.

Also, simply sending an email to the admin of the site in question is hardly an acceptable way to deal with the problem, especially when the email you sent is clearly suggesting it is just a problem one user is seeing. Hardly an incentive for the site admin to investigate the problem.

If you were really interested in finding a solution to the problem you might have tested the mirror yourself to see if what I was saying was true, and that would invariably have had a significant impact on the email you sent to the site admin.

Having said all that, I realize that I can't complain too much, since I myself am not hosting a Gentoo mirror. The last thing I want to be is one of those people who complain about bugs in OSS, but can't be bothered to submit a patch, or even open up a debugger. Since I don't have the ability to host a mirror, the best I could do is offer my services to help check the quality of the mirrors, or help out in any other way I can.

Apologies if my tone offended. It was not meant to, and was merely the expression of my frustration.

Jefferey,

I'm surprised this has been going on for a month. I must say, however, that I did noticed the slow down yesterday when I tried to sync my desktop against our server.

Regardless, the info is not a lie nor has the connection been overloaded (this is lab space in the UUNet Canada office) the slowness was caused by our raid module running into some issues but since only irrelevant warnings were generated in our logs our processes that scan for errors didn't pick them up. I have cleared up these issues and we are back to full speed.

[cough]

Okay so I can see I stand corrected. Apparently simply sending an email to site admin is a great way to deal with the problem.

I sincerely apologize for flying off the handle.

I have to say though, that I still think random sampling of the mirrors for quality is a good idea.

Thanks Evan for looking into the problem so quickly, and thanks Jeffery for being diplomatic. Next time I encounter any similar type of issue I shall endeavor to approach it differently.
