Description Duncan 2018-02-24 07:23:39 UTC
I'm looking for a qt5 replacement for the still qt4-based qmpdclient, and found bempc.

But the in-tree snapshot and homepage listed for bempc is outdated, tho it does list the new sourceforge page with a (much!) newer version, 1.5.x compared to in-tree 0.11-patch-snapshot, from the old homepage according to bug #539590.

New sourceforge page:

https://mpcbe.sourceforge.io/

Unfortunately, sourceforge is partially offline ATM and is serving limited content, with the summary page redirecting to files:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/files/

But google has the home page in their webcache:

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https%3A%2F%2Fmpcbe.sourceforge.io%2F

While that describes it as an MS-platform media player, presumably being qt5 based and GPLv3 (updated from the in-tree GPLv2) it's still Linux buildable as well.

FWIW, based on the 0.11 snapshot, which I merged to try, bempc isn't to my tastes, particularly with at least two other in-tree qt5-based mpc clients (quimup and cantata) to try, but I thought I'd file the bug since I have the information and the in-tree snapshot version /is/ so outdated. Based on bug 539590 there's probably at least one gentooer that would appreciate the new version.

Drilling down to [1] suggests 1.5.1 is the latest release.

Yet [1] suggests 1.5.0.

Though they are named similarly bempc and MPC-BE are COMPLETELY different projects! bempc builds on mpd and is a pure audio player. MPC-BE is a "Media Player Classic" and plays audio and video and the audio part likely isn't based on mpd (couldn't clarify that as sf.net stopped loading for me while browsing the source tree).

Of course adding MPC-BE could be interesting for others. But (as I said) it isn't the same piece of software and hence no update.

Hmm... You appear to be correct.

Sourceforge was redirecting this (from the original linux-apps homepage, as mentioned above)...

https://sourceforge.net/p/be-mpc/code/

... to the mpcbe/files URL I listed in the original filing. Thus the confusion.

Now that more of sourceforge has come back up, sourceforge is no longer doing that redirect and as you point out it's very apparent the two entries are different projects.

Tho there's still no actual code on the real bempc sourceforge page, tho I'm not sure whether it's because the author took it down (moved it in the mass exodus a year or two ago?) and there's no source code to be had on sourceforge any longer, or because sourceforge isn't yet entirely back up.

But no matter. Either way, it's apparent I was confused now and the two really are separate projects, which explains the for-Windows bit on mpc-be, with no mention of Linux bit as well, so it's unlikely to be useful for gentooers at all, and I'm marking resolved/invalid.

Thanks for pointing out my confusion! =%^? Glad to be disabused of it!
