Description Tony Clark 2002-08-14 14:01:06 UTC
Java plugin fails when mozilla is started with the following error:
tony@power:~$ LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/opt/blackdown-jre-1.3.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so
[/opt/blackdown-jre-1.3.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so: undefined
symbol: __vt_17nsGetServiceByCID]
This was with blackdown, ibm and sun version give basically the same
error..undefined symbol

Cannot be fixed if not by sun/blackdown.

Comment 2 Tony Clark 2002-08-16 05:13:00 UTC
Maybe a binary version of mozilla compiled with gcc2.95 should be placed in
portage so ppl could install mozilla-bin if they wanted java support as the
problem doesn't seem to be going to get resolved in the near future.
Comment 3 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-08-16 13:28:00 UTC
And how you think its going to work with all the gcc3 compiled C++ libs ?
Comment 4 Tony Clark 2002-08-16 13:52:22 UTC
Can't it be compiled with static libs? I know it is a pain, I just throwing
ideas around to find a way out for the time being.

I'm so p*ssed with Sun, Blackdown and IBM for not rebuilding their JDKs on the
current stable release of GCC, I'm inclined to mark this as WONTFIX.

If I'm not mistaken there are no solutions to this problem.

I believe the only thing to do is lobby your Java vendor for a GCC3.2 compiled
JDK. See Sun's "Bug Parade" #4694590. Vote for that bug if you wish, and maybe
drop a friendly comment on why you think it's important.

If you wish to access an applet, consider using the "appletviewer" program which
ships with most JDKs.

Maybe there should be a small comment on this bug in the port? It's no fun that
the people are running into that problem on and on.

Subject: Re: [Fwd: gcc 3.2.x build of the sdk?]

Hi Craig

We are trying to remove the plugin C++ dependencies for our 1.4.2 release. We
only have the resources to build and test one version so if we shipped a gcc
3.2 version today
it wouldn't work on most of the other browsers out there because of the same
ABI
incompatility issue with gcc. I know its not the gentoo way but you can get a
mozilla build from mozilla.org that will work
