Description J Robert Ray 2004-09-18 22:31:01 UTC
On my new 15" powerbook G4, the keys to control keyboard illumination level (F8-F10, or Fn+F8-F10 depending on configuration) are dead keys.

xev displays no events when these keys are pressed.

I discovered a kernel patch to enable these keys here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2004/06/msg00465.html

The patch applies cleanly to gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7-r14, and with the patch the keys work as expected.

Without this patch it is necessary to configure a utility such as pbbuttonsd to use some other key combination to control keyboard illumination.

If you are keeping score, this patch is not in 2.6.8.

We'll have a look at including this.

I am keeping score :)

So, if it's not in an upstream kernel, and it's not a bugfix, we will not add
it to the gentoo-dev-sources kernel, sorry.

Please get upstream to accept the patch, that way all users of linux benifit,
and then you will get it through the gentoo tree for free :)
