When emerging net-print/hplip-3.17.10-r1 the following QA warning will be detected by portage:

> This package has a configure.in file which has long been deprecated. Please
> update it to use configure.ac instead as newer versions of autotools will die
> when it finds this file. See https://bugs.gentoo.org/426262 for details.

Thanks! Lets see how upstream decides.

I personally do not see this as a bug. Although configure.ac is preferred configure.in is not deprecated. It is still mentioned as a valid name in the documentation [1] [2].
