Description James Rowe 2004-09-18 00:00:48 UTC
renameutils is one of those little packages you will wonder how you ever did without.

It is basically just a bunch of tools for renaming files easily, including a nice readline based interactive editor. It also includes a tool deurlname which removes all the nasty character escapes in files your Windows using friends sends you ;)

Grr, only moments after I hit the submit button a new version was released. Find the attached updated ebuild for version 0.5.1.

0.5.1 also fixes the NLS build issues, and consequently the ebuild checks the nls use flag now.

Comment 4 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-18 12:29:25 UTC
how is it different from sys-apps/rename?
Comment 5 Joseph Booker 2004-09-18 14:45:50 UTC
The HOMEPAGE is also a broken link
Comment 6 James Rowe 2004-09-18 19:28:59 UTC
Seemant,

Firstly, the imv command delivers a prompt that accepts all the standard(and any user defined) readline commands. For example, imv my_file.txt will pop up a interactive prompt where you can use C-w to scrub words or C-<left|right> to move about within the filename to change it. Personally I find this way of editing filenames really useful.

qmv allows you to edit a bunch of filenames from the comfort of your editor, with all the s&r power it provides you.

As far as I can see sys-apps/rename doesn't provide either of these methods, and for my own purposes lacks the useful of renameutils. I guess that isn't a great reason for inclusion though ;)

I would have to say that IMHO sys-apps/rename shares almost nothing in common with renameutils.

Joseph,

I just retried the homepage link, and it works fine here

In a last ditch pimping attempt, I would like to add that renameutils also
provides deurlname which is the perfect way to deal with all those ugly named
files your Windows-using friends send you or for pages saved from your browser.

No more URL encoded filenames!

renameutils-0.6.0.ebuild

Submitting an ebuild for renameutils-0.6.0. Would love to see this very useful
package added to portage.

Would really love this to get into portage...
Comment 11 Michael Lee Yohe 2005-07-26 09:24:59 UTC
OP - change bug name to:

[RFE] Add renameutils to Portage (ebuild attached)

Maybe that will get some more attention from the maintainers.
