For some time now gcc-7.2.0 and gcc-7.2.0-r1 fails to compile with error:  cannot find -lc

It looks like you have the 17.1 profile selected. This profile is NOT intended for general usage.

Did you follow the instructions in the news item?

damn, I've changed blindly from an outdated profile to the latest one.

No problem. I suspect you could get things working again by restoring the /lib and /usr/lib symlinks, but that's just a guess. If you need further help, I suggest dropping by #gentoo on the Freenode IRC network.
