After installing x11-misc/sddm-0.17.0-r1 I get a black screen and I can see the cursor blinking from console on the upper left corner of the screen. Switching back to x11-misc/sddm-0.15.0 solves this matter. It is sad to read that you have problems with the software. The situation seems to be a bit more complicate and requires some analysis. We can not help you efficiently via bug tracker. The bug tracker aims rather on specific problems in .ebuilds and less on individual systems. I have had very good experience on the gentoo IRC [1] with questions like this. Of course there are also forums and mailing lists [2,3]. I hope you understand, that I will close the bug here therefore and wish you good luck on one of the mentioned channels [4]. Same problem. My system using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-340.104:0/340::gentoo Looks like sddm is unable to start xorg.
Same problem with x11-misc/sddm-0.17.0-r1 in a system with stable x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-387.22, x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.5 and kde-plasma/kwin-5.10.5. SDDM failure is not directly related to Xorg as I can manually start Xorg through the startx script, using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-387.22, and successfully run twm.
