Description David Bruha 2004-09-16 02:18:13 UTC
Hi,
I'm running ~x86 and not long ago I have upgraded to qt-3.3.3-r1. Yesterday my system has compiled kdepim-3.3.0-r1 and suddenly this strange error appeared. When creating a new mail I can't enter the recipient's address or click at the ... button to lanch the address book. The application crashes with trace symbols appended bellow.

I have thought it to be a problem of the -r1 build so I have recompilled the older kdepim-3.3.0 but the situation is still the same.

Can I do anything to get more relevant information from the backtrace? Btw - KMail crashes also when I close it - with the same signal (11).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start KMail
2. Create a new message
3. Type anything in any address line or press the "..." button

or

1. Start KMail
2. Close KMail (Ctrl+Q)

Actual Results:
KMail crashed and got signal 11 (Crashing)

Backtrace information

Don't know if the backtrace explains a lot - have tried to compile kmail with
debug flag but the output is still the same.
Comment 2 Meder Bakirov 2004-09-16 04:05:20 UTC
Have the same problem. Rollback to the previous version of the kdepim didn't help.
Comment 3 Meder Bakirov 2004-09-16 04:12:51 UTC
Tried to rollback QT and re-emerge kdepim - didn't help :(
Comment 4 Florian Evers 2004-09-16 04:20:06 UTC
Same here.
KMail is unusable now: It crashes when selecting email addresses and when
closing it.

Same problem here...
I'm using GPG and LDAP... I tought it was LDAP :-/ but disabling it doesn't help.
This is really annoying!
Comment 7 Gabe Yoder 2004-09-16 07:28:27 UTC
I have also seen kmail become crash happy. I my home machine, it would crash everytime I closed the application or tried to send an email. I wiped all of the kmail configuration from my .kde directory, and after setting all of my settings again, it seems to be working okay. I upgraded my machine at work, and the problem appeared. I tried wiping the kmail stuff from my .kde directory, and things improved but it still crashes when I try send email.
Comment 8 Simone Gotti (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-16 08:03:00 UTC
Hi, Sorry but I can reproduce this.

You can try launching "kconf_update" by the current user and see if it works.

Comment 10 Dick Marinus 2004-09-16 08:50:20 UTC
i've re-emerged kdelibs and it seems to be fixed...
Comment 11 Dan A. Dickey 2004-09-16 09:29:43 UTC
Same problem here.
I'm going re-emerge kdelibs, see if that helps me out.

In the meantime - I've found that pasting the addresses into
kmail will help with the composer. It won't crash. However,
as soon as you click the send button, *then* it crashes.
Leaving the message in your outbox, but it may already be sent.
One of the mailing lists I sent a message to via this method looks
like it got my message twice.
Comment 12 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-16 09:52:25 UTC
has everyone who is experiencing this problem just recently upgraded to kdepim-3.3.0-r1?
Comment 13 Florian Evers 2004-09-16 09:53:59 UTC
Re-emerging kdelibs (and kdebase... don't know if it was necessary but I forgot
to re-check kmail) helps. Perhaps the problem is related to the update
to gcc 3.4? I did only a "emerge -e system", no "emerge -eD world".
Now I do a "emerge -eD kde", but _this_ problem is solved now. :-)

Comment 14 Florian Evers 2004-09-16 09:56:44 UTC
@Caleb:
Yes, my last "emerge uDv world" was last night. Last update was ~1
week ago, and it updated gcc, kdepim and qt all at once.

Comment 15 David Bruha 2004-09-16 11:43:57 UTC
I have tried a solution suggested by 26reverse at the Forums (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1545005#1545005) - to move kmailrc (from ~/.kde3.3/share/config/kmailrc) elsewhere and let kmail recreate it (by reentering all the accounts information). I have to say it worked and now my kmail works properly again.
Comment 16 Dick Marinus 2004-09-16 11:49:10 UTC
yes, I've recreated the kmailrc too...
Comment 17 Dick Marinus 2004-09-16 11:50:22 UTC
yes, I've recreated the kmailrc too... (before remerging kdelibs) but it didn't do the trick...
I've:
- removed kmailrc
- re-emerged kdepim
- re-emerged kdebase
- re-emerged kdelibs

Now it works 'fine'
Comment 18 David Bruha 2004-09-16 12:06:45 UTC
Hmm - I was perhaps a little bit too enthusiastic. Removing kmailrc has helped me with the address problem but kmail still dies when sending mail. I'm going to try to recompile kdelibs (and perhaps also kdebase).
I vaguely remember from the time I was compiling kde from cvs sources that I had to recompile kdelibs everytime qt has changed. Perhaps the ebuild should take care of that now?
Comment 19 Simone Gotti (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-16 13:24:33 UTC
Like I've said at comment #8, there's a program called "kconf_update" that will update the configuration programs when they will change for example from kdepim-3.2 to kdepim-3.3. this program must be launched from the user because it will look in the $HOME/.kde/share/config dir.
We, kde developers, create a .kcfg files that has the rules for updating the configuration files.

@develepers:
I haven't seen this but I think that should be added an einfo to the ebuilds to inform the users that they should run it. What do you think?
Comment 20 Meder Bakirov 2004-09-17 02:50:05 UTC
OK, I also can confirm that re-emerging kdelibs solves the problem ;) It did for me :)
Comment 21 Manas Tazabekov 2004-09-17 04:26:49 UTC
Yep! Re-emerging kde-libs really helps. It is okay for now :)
Thanks guys.
Comment 22 David Bruha 2004-09-21 01:25:24 UTC
OK - everything works now. Thank you all for your input. I would like to second Simone Gotti (#19) - could developers add a note to the ebuild about the necessity of using 'kconf_update'? I have never heard of it before.:(
Comment 23 Dan A. Dickey 2004-09-21 08:10:48 UTC
Re: kconf_update

Isn't this run perhaps by kdm when it detects a version change/update?
It should be.
Something goes out of its way to create new .kdeV.V directories in my
home directory when I login for the first time after a version update.
I would have thought that perhaps kconf_update is run more or less
automatically as some point. And I think this should be when the user
logs in.
Also, where's the man page for kconf_update?
Comment 24 Simone Gotti (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-21 08:26:20 UTC
Probably you're right.
I don't know if it's kdm. But It's logical that is should be automatically executed, if it's not kdm probably it's kbuildsycoca or something else. I have to investigate...
Comment 25 Guy 2004-09-26 05:34:37 UTC
The problem is created when you emerge:

kdepim-3.3.0-r1

The solution is to re-emerge:

kdelibs-3.3.0
Comment 26 Ulrich Plate (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-05 03:13:31 UTC
A little observation before I try the suggested solutions above: I'm running a multi-user host where two persons are using KMail -- interestingly enough, one does have the exact same problem you describe, the other doesn't... Furthermore, the one who had those crashes on entering an email address could still send mail when replying to someone's message, and the problem disappeared altogether when using KMail indirectly as part of Kontact!
Comment 27 Dick Marinus 2004-11-24 13:35:17 UTC
I suppose this bug can be closed?
Comment 28 David Bruha 2004-11-24 15:22:56 UTC
I think so, the problem is resolved.
