Well, that's nuts, I specifically re-emerged OpenSSL and reattempted before submitting this and one other bug. However, that is not the underlying issue here. My system was in the process of wheels-coming-totally-off due to totally hosed GCC upgrade (even following cookbook instructions provided by Gentoo "news"). This bug should silently go away as this is related to those system corruption issues and very likely cannot be reproduced in any meaningful way.
