Description sphakka 2004-09-10 04:56:21 UTC
Two anomalous behaviors with kernel 2.6.7-win4lin-r5 + prism54 (Netgear WG511), hotkeys, mozilla:

1) at boot up: KDM login manager starts, leave it untouched (no login attempt, no key pressed), after 20-30 seconds the system re-boots unexpectedly.
2) after having booted: log-in without waiting, wait for KDE to load and show all its stuff, then push th MAIL button to start mozilla-mail (hotkeys package is used), system freezes (at least X; hard reboot necessary). I've not tested if the machine is reacheable via network...

No problem booting with card unplugged.
All fine with other 2.4.x-gentoo, 2.6.x-gentoo kernels.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the laptop,
2. wait for KDM login prompt to appear
3.a wait some seconds, or
3.b log-in
4.b push the hotkey MAIL (assigned to mozilla-mail)
5.b mozilla starts and tries to access the network

Actual Results:
3.a -> system reboots
5.b -> system freezes (mozilla-mail still in "sandglass" phase)

Expected Results:
3.a -> stand waiting for log-in
5.b -> access network and connect to mail servers

The system is composed of:
- Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook C1020 (see attached lspci output)
- Netgear WG511 wireless pcmcia
- Linux flexzo 2.6.7-win4lin-r5 #1 Sat Aug 14 12:15:31 CEST 2004 i686 Mobile
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 1.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
- KDE 3.2.3
- hotkeys 0.5.7.1-r1
- mozilla 1.7.2-r1

Both win4lin and wi-fi modules are loaded at boot.
See attachements for a system log excerpt.

Comment 3 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-11 12:55:46 UTC
If you try the latest 2.6.8.1 patchesv on a vanilla 2.6.8.1 kernel available at http://www.netraverse.com/member/downloads/kernel_patch.php do you also get these lockups and reboots?
Comment 4 sphakka 2004-09-13 06:49:31 UTC
Tried vanilla kernel 2.6.8.1 with mki-adapter26_1_3_7.patch (see attached config file): almost same behavior, but a bit more randomly lockingup/rebooting. After boot-up, sometimes reboots, sometimes locks up, btw always unstable!
I made another test: after boot-up, switch to text console, log in as user, try to open a network connection (e.g. via ssh) -> system crashes with an endless flood of oops messages; in one case it stopped with a panic (see attached files).

Comment 8 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-15 12:46:15 UTC
Can you reproduce this on 2.6.9?
Comment 9 sphakka 2004-11-15 14:15:17 UTC
I'm waiting for the right Netraverse's patch: tested against a 2.6.8.1 patch, but couldn't compile...
Comment 10 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-15 14:18:41 UTC
Can you not use the 2.6.9 win4lin ebuild in portage?

boot log 2.6.9-win4lin

Tested also 2.6.9 ebuild. Got similar results as with previous kernels:
- one panic occurrence (couldn't trace it) at the first network operation
attempt;
- self-reboot at any other attempt to access the network;
- in some cases, some errors occur and the wifi card is not activated (see
attached "boot log 2.6.9-win4lin").

Again, booting with the card uninserted, and configuring it after boot works
fine.
Note that, the system is upgraded to use the "coldplug" interface instead of
the old hotplug boot sequence.

If this is a wn4lin issue I would consider it as UPSTREAM for win4lin.

Do you also experience this issue in gentoo-dev-sources without the win4lin patch?
Comment 13 sphakka 2004-11-16 08:58:43 UTC
Not at all, all gentoo-dev-sources I use (currently 2.6.9-r4) work fine!
Comment 14 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-16 09:08:09 UTC
Please report this issue upstream, we can do nothing about it, if win4lin releases broken kernel patches.
Comment 15 sphakka 2004-11-17 08:10:31 UTC
Ok, but sorry for my ignorance, what does exactly UPSTREAM mean? Should I report this issue to another gentoo's bugzilla branch, or should I contact win4lin's developers?
Comment 16 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-17 10:55:17 UTC
You are right, upstream is win4lin developers. So please contact them as we cannot really fix the problem without digging deeper into the kernel patch.
