Hi, It seems like vmware has some problem acquiring ram from the host machine once I upgraded to kernel 4.13.6. I used Google to search around and found this bit from archlinux that seems like the same problem. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware#Failed_to_lock_page_for_guest_RAM_on_Linux_4.13 Here is the snip from the vmware error logs: 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MsgQuestion: msg.monitorInit.mem.lockFailed reply=0 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: caller 0 numvm 1 locked pages: num 12231 max 0 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: locked Page Limit: host 0 config 7196672 dynam -1 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: minmempct 50 timestamp 744 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: VM 0 min 1075249 max 2123825 shares 2097152 paged 1024095 nonpaged 6142 anonymous 20531 locked 12231 touchedPct 93 dirtiedPct 93 timestamp 744 vmResponsive is 1 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: locked 12231 target 12231 balloon 17320 17320 1363148 swapped 459555 459555 allocd 0 128 state 3 2 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: states: 0 156 : 1 325 : 2 1102 : 3 3589 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| I125: MemSched: Balloon enabled 1 guestType 4 maxSize 0 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| E105: PANIC: Failed to lock page for guest RAM! 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| W115: 2017-10-15T14:07:38.454-07:00| vcpu-0| W115+ The core dump limit is set to ZERO; With which vmware product do you experience this issue? Please put the full catagory/package in the bug summary.
I am having problems with app-emulation/vmware-player
I have put the needed patches for version vmware 12.5 in the overlay, please test it
Verified, it is working now on kernel 4.13.11 thanks.
(In reply to chenglcc from comment #4) > Verified, it is working now on kernel 4.13.11 Please close as RESOLVED / FIXED. Note: a) Please upgrade to current 12.5.8 minor to avoid vulnerabilities: Bug 637922 - [vmware] app-emulation/vmware-{workstation, player}-12.5.8 version bump [VMSA-2017-0018] multiple security vulnerabilities b) EOL : https://bugs.gentoo.org/634770#c14
