let me test them with the latest kernel and the latest xorg-x11 (will take a couple of days at least)
People are reporting hard lock-ups with xorg 6.8.0 when using opengl applications. This might be fixed soon since the problem was mentioned as a release blocker for the 6.8.0. (I can't remember the exact bug#, but it blocked https://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=351) http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33780304 (see post by syscrash2k)
Thats correct. More can be found on http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33780469 and bug #61574
hah, too funny. Right after emerging 3.12, glxinfo and glxgears worked! But flg_glxgears complained that the module mismatched -- of course, the 3.9.0 fglrx was still loaded! So I exited X and rmmoded the old module and modprobed the new one... now everything fails again and boots me out of X! (no hard lock up though, at least)
I've just installed 3.12.0 ATI drivers. I'm using X.org 6.7.0-r2 as the new 6.8.0 crashed with the 3.11.1 drivers too, when loading Gnome, or running some OpenGL app under Fluxbox. Well, problems I've found with the 3.12.0 drivers: - Icculus-quake2 now runs at 6-7 fps, before ran smoothly (+40). (???) - Textures look like shit in QuakeI/II/III and other OpenGL games. Jus like when I used 3.9.0 drivers. Is a kind of super-texture-compression that makes textures blocky. It was fixed in 3.11.1, but now is back. :( - Glxgears. I know is not too relevant, but I got 1800fps with 3.9.0, 1200 with 3.11.1 and 800 with 3.12.0!!! On the other hand UT2003 ran _much_ better with 3.11.1 ones than with 3.9.0, and so does with 3.12.0, so I don't know what to think... old games slower / new games faster? Just when I thought ATI was finally enhancing their drivers... let's hope this is only a temporal problem. P.S. - I use a Radeon 9600 Pro.
The quake2-icculus solved using the quake2-qmax version (???) I'll investigate it in the next days. Sounds weird.
the ebuild is ~x86 has pinned deps on xfree and xorg-x11 in order not to break for binary incompatibility, closing as fixed for problems about performance and functionality could be better open other bugs.
