i was using athcool since few mounths and i've never had troubles with that, but it couse kernel errors and even system hangup with new kernels. on 2.6.5 it was one error like 'bad: scheduling while atomic' per few minutes, but on 2.6.8.1 there were so many errors that logging proces took 100% of cpu and it was impossible to run some bigger application (like x server for example). i was pretty sure, that problem is coused by some kind of hardware failure, but it stops after turn off athcool. i'm not sure if it depends on some option in kernel (i can paste my .config if you like) or it's general bug, but anyway i think athcool should be hardmasked, to avoid this kind of problems and weeks of looking for a reason of them by other users.
Have you read the documents and instructions at http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/jacobi/linux/softwares.html ?
to be honest - i havn't;> i've read it now and i've found nothing except: " WARNING: Depending on your motherboard and/or hardware components, enabling powersaving mode may cause: [...] * system locks or instability If you met those problems, you should not use athcool." i undestand that some programs can couse some troubles, but in he other hand that's why masking mechanizm exist, am i wrong? BTW: i've also found on that page, that program is tested and works fine with my chip (KT333) and as i wrote before - i havn't got any troubles with it in older kernels
I'm not really sure what there is to do but maybe the kernel guys can give a little input.
try with athcool-3.8
