Description Andreas Oehler 2017-09-11 20:13:41 UTC
Upgrading my system today pulled in x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.10.0 and starting the gnome desktop lead to journalctl:

Sep 11 21:50:10 mechatron /usr/libexec/gdm-x-session[32036]: /usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so: undefined symbol: exaMoveInPixmap

masking x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.10.0 and returning to x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.9.0 seemed to have fixed the issue for me.

Either there is something i missed to rebuild (tried with mesa) or there is something weird broken.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge
2. x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.10.0
3. login gnome session
Actual Results:
xsession crashes: Sep 11 21:50:10 mechatron /usr/libexec/gdm-x-session[32036]: /usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so: undefined symbol: exaMoveInPixmap

log snipped of x-server crash

Hi Jonas,

i am sorry there is nothing left in /var/tmp/portage because all emerges worked flawlessly. This is a runtime bug and i think i cited the relevant log snippets already in my post.

Added some more surrounding information with this attachment.

I just 'fixed' the issue for me by emerging the old version of x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati which lead to a working system again, therefore my assumption that this has something to do with this package...

Thanks and Cheers

Andreas

Hi,

i have now had time to dig deeper into this:
I noticed that re-emerging linux-firmware (AFTER) emerging xf86-video-ati-7.10.0 seemed to have brought me back a somehow working gnome session.

https://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-announce/2017-September/002806.html points to the changed behaviour with the pixmaps i suppose.

After more checking newly appearing error messages after that (missing radeonsi) if checked deeper on https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon and i suppose some things changed or were irrelevant with the old versions there since i first configured the basis of my system setup ~3.5 years ago. I added radeonsi as well now. Gnome comes up properly now after loging into gdm. It even feels a bit more responsive probably.

So you might blame it on me, for not properly following up all these changes. With this respect xf86-video-ati upgrade from 7.9.0 to 7.10.0 looks like some breaking change.

So i hope this report helps anyone running into the same issues, and from my side it can be closed now.

Sorry for the noise,
thanks and cheers

Andreas
