It fails on something to do with the thumbnailer.

Did you upgrade any xfce packages recently? This looks like mixing old xfdesktop with newer deps.

I did and when I checked to see if there was also a 4.13.x of xfdesktop there wasn't. I see now that there is, and am emerging it right now.

I thought that the whole dependency system of Gentoo should protect you against incompatibilities like this?

Only when we know about the problem. If you confirm xfdesktop upgrade solves it and we figure out which package causes the problem, I'll be happy to fix it.

xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.12.3 is no longer in the tree, and no one appears to have reported this issue for newer versions, so it looks like we can close this bug.
