Description Matthew Stapleton 2017-08-25 00:21:10 UTC
In my user fonts.conf file configured via KDE: .fonts.conf -> /home/<username>/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf , when I have antialias turned off and font hinting enabled, www-client/chromium-60.0.3112.78 ignores that and turns off font hinting which makes some letters look bolded and some unbolded. www-client/google-chrome-60.0.3112.101 and www-client/chromium-59.0.3071.104 correctly keep hinting enabled. At first I thought it was my installed fonts, or outdated font rendering libraries so I updated them, but then I realised that google chrome-60 renders the same fonts "Times New Roman", "Arial", and "Monospace" fine. Then I tried with another user in KDE that doesn't get used often to make sure it wasn't just my profile having problems, and it had the same results after setting antialias to false and hinting to true. I haven't tried a new user with Gnome though or a completely new from scratch Gentoo as both Chromium 59 and Google-Chrome 60 render okay and they have the gtk3 flag. Also, /proc/<google-chrome-pid>/maps shows the same libraries loaded and strace shows similar font files and configs being loaded. I also, tried compiling chromium-60 with CFLAGS set to just "-O2 -pipe" and LDFLAGS="", but that made no difference. I also tried with antialias enabled as that is a common solution, but it seems to cause me eyestrain on my laptop.

Here is the emerge info of each version to show the use flags applied:

Comment 1 Matthew Stapleton 2017-08-25 06:02:42 UTC
It looks like this issue is fixed in www-client/chromium-61.0.3163.49
Comment 2 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2017-08-28 08:43:32 UTC
Please consider building chromium locally and bisecting - see https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/lkcr/docs/linux_build_instructions.md .
Comment 3 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2017-09-30 16:28:45 UTC
M61 is stable now, closing.
