Description gad.kadosh 2004-09-04 06:05:44 UTC
Since upgrading to 0.4.2-r11, running aterm no longer reads it's settings from the resource file ~/.Xdefaults.
The file itself never changed, uses aterm*... I tried Aterm* and ATerm* but no help.
When I downgraded to r9 it worked again.

Reproducible: Always

Since -r11 aterm gets its settings from the X server. Try running:
  xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults

If it works for you, add this line to your X startup files. Alternatively, you can move your .Xdefaults to .Xresources, which is automatically loaded by the xinit scripts.

ok thanks
the xrdb -load worked. Just renaming to .Xresources didn't make any difference but if I understand correctly I have to restart the X server so it loads the files into it's own settings.

My question is what's the right way to do it now. Through .Xdefaults and xrdb or .Xresouces? I'm using GDM so I don't know if it loads .Xresources automatically...

Thanks!

The easiest and so probably the 'right' way is to use ~/.Xresources, because it is already automatically loaded by /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc when the X server starts. I'm not sure, but my guess would be that Xresources is loaded when GDM is started, too.

Hey,

Thanks.
.Xresources does work with GDM too and is indeed the easiest way. Maybe this change in aterm's config setting should be indocated in pkg_postinst of the ebuild?

Thanks again...
