Currently "gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps" pulls more packages for installation - packages that themselves pull gnome 3 as a dependency - than is necessary for particular programs. I'm speaking particularly of the "games" use flag. I assume this flag is in place of the removed "gnome-games" meta package. I am running Mate and do not wish to pull all of gnome 3 with it's systemd requirement to play a few games while waiting for downloads to complete or programs to finish. I can and have emerged the list of games in the ebuild by themselves, and they pull the small dependencies they need. My preference would be to have "gnome-extra-apps" in world instead of the individual games, similarly to how it would be with the "gnome-games" meta, particularly to when it comes to unmerging. I can suggest adding a "gnome" use flag to pull the bulk of the programs that "gnome-extra-apps" provides. At least consider some adjustment so "gnome-extra-apps" will behave better, and not always pull a whole desktop with it. Trivial, like the above severity implies. Keep on with the good work! Paul.
gnome-extra-apps is a meta package that is intended to be installed on top of a Gnome 3 desktop so while I understand your desire to avoid it, I don't think what you ask is what the ebuild should aim for.
Also, what I would have gone with otherwise it to add a gnome-games metadata but this name is being recycled upstream for an application of its own.
